Joseph Burton-Harris JBH in his rookie year at the SCCA Runoffs became 2015 SCCA National Champion in the Formula Mazda class by 9.906 seconds with the fastest lap of the race at 1.58.029 on lap 13 of 14. After a tight start with JBH entering turn 1 in first place followed by a 3 wide battle for second, Carson Weeder eventually claimed second place on the track as the local favourite. A battle ensued between Weeder and JBH for a lap or two before JBH pulled a one-second gap that only increased as the race developed.
Second place was a little more contentious as Mike Anderson, the reigning champion from 2014, caught and passed Weeder for 2nd on the 10th lap. Some exciting drafting and passing began between the two skilled drivers until Weeder finally crossed the line 2nd with the 2nd fastest lap at 1.58.828.
JBH put on a show of driving perfection consistently putting in 1min 58sec lap time’s that created a lead unbreakable by any Daytona 31degree banking tow. As the 2015 SCCA National Champion, Joseph Burton-Harris has capped off an incredible year in the Formula Mazda class winning every race (bar 1 where he finished 2nd) and succeeding against some of the great FM drivers of the previous decade such as Darryl Wills; Mike Anderson and Alan McCallum. The young ex-karter based out of Cresson, Texas is ready to move on to the next class on the Road to Indy, the ‘Pro-Mazda Championship’, where his rookie learning will begin once more.
